2nd / 8th Battalion TA Lancashire Fusiliers

The 2/8th was a TA Battalion and was in 199 Bde of 66 Div.

In 1939 it was responsible for security of the Salford area.

The CO was Lt Col W Sharratt TD.

They moved to Ripon in 1940, and then to Malton and Norton and after that to Lowestoft coast watching.
They were there when a stray dog set off no fewer than 600 landmines in one awesome explosion!

Wokingham and then Hastings St Leonard were next ( January 1941).

Exercises in Aldershot and Amesbury that summer were followed by a move to Hull (December 1941).

May 1942 saw them at Keldy Castle Yorks.
Minden Day was celebrated at Hornsea.

In January 1943 they moved to Bridestowe and they took part in some important waterproofing trials ( shades of things to come)

Minden 1943 was spent at Arundel, followed by Shoreham and embarkation for Northern Ireland Ballynahinch)in December.

They were heavily involved in training up drafts in prep for D Day and following the Normandy landings they were reduced to cadre strength due to the heavy demands to replace losses on D Day.

They moved to Ballarena and spent the rest of the war retraining spare airmen and sailors to re-man the losses of 8 Battalions.
