Killed in action 1st June 1918.

In the early weeks of June 1918 the 18th Bn took part in an attack to take some high ground in a place called Aveluy Woods.

They advanced from a place called Heathcotes Bank, which is quite near Martinsart.

There was a ravine running between Martinsart and Aveluy Woods which was rushed by a Patoon of the 18th Bn.

They captured the high ground but then came under heavy machine gun fire from another nearby hill to the South and were forced to withdraw.

The 18th Bn suffered 20 killed and 144 wounded.
